Dogs have dwelled and worked with humans in so many functions that they have acquired the exclusive nickname, "man's best friend", a saying which is used in other dialects as well. They have been bred for herding livestock, searching (e.g. pointers and hounds), rodent control, defending, helping fishermen with nets, and dragging burdens, in supplement to their roles as companions.
